The NHS has launched a public consultation on proposed improvements to vascular services in Lancashire and South Cumbria. Sam McDowell, a former All-Star pitcher who played for Cleveland, the Giants, Yankees and Pirates, has died aged 84. The cause of death is unknown. McDowell debuted in the major leagues at 18 in 1961 and led the American League in strikeouts five times during his 15-year career, recording 2,453 strikeouts. He also won the ERA title in 1965 with a 2.18 ERA and made six All-Star Games. His career was cut short at 32 in 1975 due to alcohol abuse, which he later described as making him 'the biggest, most hopeless and most violent drunk in baseball'. After entering rehabilitation in 1978, he became a licensed therapist in sports psychology and addictions, later working with the Toronto Blue Jays and Texas Rangers. From 1987 to 2016, he served as an addiction and recovery consultant for the Baseball Assistance Team.
