Illinois man charged with mailing powder-filled threatening letters to Congress

An Illinois man has been charged with mailing letters containing white powder to members of Congress, with his own name on the return address.

Matthew Unglesbee, 37, of Quincy, Illinois, has been charged with mailing threatening communications and perpetrating a hoax after sending four letters containing white powder to members of Congress in the Chicago area. The letters were postmarked in Springfield on 19 October and each bore Unglesbee's handwritten name and home address as the return address. Three letters contained notes reading 'HAHA' and a fourth read 'HAH enjoy the gift'. Unglesbee admitted to the FBI that the substance was salt, which he said 'kind of looks like' anthrax, and claimed he sent the letters as a joke. The FBI received an anonymous tip after someone overheard Unglesbee at a restaurant saying he had mailed the substances. Recipients included U.S. Representatives Jan Schakowsky, Mike Quigley and Brad Schneider, and U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth. According to court records, Unglesbee has previous convictions for sexual assault and threatening a public official.
