Stan Wawrinka ends 24-year career in emotional Basel farewell
Stan Wawrinka, the three-time Grand Slam champion, retired from professional tennis after losing to Jiri Lehecka at his home tournament in Basel.
Stan Wawrinka's 24-year professional career ended on Tuesday when the 41-year-old Swiss lost 7-5, 7-6 to Czech player Jiri Lehecka in the first round of the ATP 500 event Swiss Indoors in Basel. Wawrinka had announced before the season that 2026 would be his final year on tour. The former world number three won three Grand Slam titles: the 2014 Australian Open (defeating Rafael Nadal), the 2015 French Open and the 2016 US Open (both against Novak Djokovic). He played in front of an emotionally supportive home crowd and completed a lap of the court after his defeat to thank them.
